Cuốn sách với nhiều tư liệu, cũng như hồi ức, ghi chép của các cán bộ chỉ huy và các phi công trực tiếp tham gia chỉ huy và chiến đấu đã thực sự góp thêm một góc nhìn về hơn 400 trận không chiến hào hùng của Không quân nhân dân Việt Nam trong chiến tranh bảo vệ Tổ quốc. Ngoài các dữ liệu lịch sử về diễn biến các trận không chiến, cuốn sách cũng đã bước đầu đưa ra một số nhận xét về chiến thuật, về vai trò của hệ thống chỉ huy-dẫn đường của hai phía trong các trận không chiến, chứng minh chiến thắng của Không quân Việt Nam không chỉ là mưu trí và lòng dũng cảm của các phi công trên bầu trời, mà còn là trí tuệ và nhãn quan chiến lược, chiến thuật của công tác tổ chức, chỉ huy, tham mưu, các kíp trực tại các Sở chỉ huy Quân chủng Phòng không- Không quân, Binh chủng Không quân và các Trung đoàn. Đó là những yếu tố cực kỳ quan trọng góp phần làm nên chiến thắng.
Mặc dù trong chiến tranh, đặc biệt là chiến tranh trên không, thông tin của các bên tham chiến về kết quả tác chiến không phải bao giờ cũng giống nhau, nhưng các tác giả đã tìm hiểu và phân tích một cách khách quan các thông tin từ hai phía. Cách làm như vậy vừa làm nổi bật chiến thắng của Không quân nhân dân Việt Nam, vừa làm cho độc giả hiểu rằng, chiến thắng của Không quân nhân dân Việt Nam trước Không quân hiện đại của Mỹ không hề dễ dàng, mà là một cuộc chiến đấu ác liệt, chấp nhận hy sinh vì thắng lợi cuối cùng .
Hy vọng những thông tin cuốn sách cung cấp sẽ giúp độc giả hiểu thêm về những năm tháng hào hùng của Không quân nhân dân Việt Nam, về các chiến công của các phi công, công tác tổ chức-chỉ huy và các thành phần phục vụ chiến đấu, những người đã làm nên chiến thắng mang tầm vóc lịch sử. Mong rằng, cuốn sách sẽ góp phần khơi dậy lòng tự hào và trọng trách của các thế hệ phi công trẻ tuổi, những người đang làm chủ các loại máy bay mới hiện đại, và gánh trách nhiệm nặng nề bảo vệ vững chắc bầu trời, lãnh thổ và biển đảo của Tổ quốc.
“Historic confrontations – Air battles between VNP Air Force and US Air Power (1965-1973)” is a book that fairly reflects the historical developments of the air war in Vietnam.
With a fair amount of documents, records of interviews with and memoirs of former commanders and pilots who, during the war, directly fought in many air battles, the book presents another angle from which one can look at more than 400 air battles fought by the heroic pilots of the VNPAF in the resistance war to protect their beloved motherland.
In addition to the historical accounts of the air battles, the authors, for the first time, also give their remarks on the tactical measures, the roles played by the ground commands (the ground-controlled intercept) which all prove that the victories recorded by the VNPAF were the results of the demonstration of not only the Vietnamese pilots’ combat skills and bravery, but also the intelligence, the strategic calculations and tactical abilities of the high-ranking officers and other personnel of the AD & AF Service as well as those of all air regiments at all times. These were extremely important factors that contributed to the victories.
Although the accounts of each battle, especially an air battle, given by the two engaging sides are not always the same, the authors have tried to study and analyze the available information from both sides in an objective way. As such, they help the readers understand the fact that the victories of the VNPAF against the modern US Air Power (USAF & USN) were not easy ones, and that these victories were won in fierce battles by Vietnamese pilots who were ready to sacrifice for the final victory.
It is hoped that the information contained in this book will help its readers with better understanding of the VNPAF‘s heroic time with its pilots’ heroic exploits, with its command officers’ organizational and command skills, and with all other VNPAF personnel’s contributions to these historic victories. It is also hoped that this book will help the young generation of Vietnamese pilots, equipped with modern types of combat aircraft, can take pride in the VNPAF‘s heroism during the war time and, therefore, feeling a strong sense of responsibility towards their motherland, they will be determined to firmly defend the land, the air space, the sea and the islands of their motherland in any situation.
